Oil light

Post by billyrobbo » 13 Nov 2005, 12:50

Probably a daft question to those of you who are not new to two strokes but... my oil light came on this morning. No problem I thought, just top it up with two stroke. I put about 500ml in and started it up and... the oil light is still on. Also, the two stoke I put in is coming out of the overflow pipe under the bike. Bo!!ocks.

I've checked the oil pump and it seems to be adjusted correctly.

Any suggestions?

thanks

Earth connections all appear to be ok. Still have the problem of two stoke coming out of the overflow. Judging by the amount that has come out I am 99% sure it is not over filled.

Hi Billy, Unless I'm missing something, most 2 stroke bikes inc. the CRMs I've seen havn't got an overflow on the 2 stroke reservoir.
I can't vouch for all Mk's but the only place mine can overflow, if I overfill, is out of the top of the tank neck, whether it be a plastic tank or as on my Mk2, the frame.
Sounds like you may have a pipe off or some other leak.
Seeing as your light won't go out too, sounds like the level switch maybe has come off and the oil is pouring out of there.
Have a look to see if this is it.

Andy.

Hi billy,
Are you putting oil into the frame or the engine ??
Most CRM oil tanks are in the frame, check that you are not filling up the gearbox oil which could be a very costly mistake.
regards

My bikes a mkII so the oil is in the frame. Its overflowing(?) from one of the rubber hoses that exit under the bike. I'll trace it back to see what it is and also check the level switch when I find out where that is!

thanks

If its anything like my Mk2 then the pipes coming out under the bike are off the carb. I will have a look at mine 2morrow.

Can you see oil in the clear tube on the headstock?? If so it could be the float switch is faulty which is located under the fuel tank on the frame can,t understand the leaking oil though :?:

it's definately 2 stroke oil coming from one of the breathers ? From memory they come from the carb and I believe one from the gearbox - could be wrong on that one though...

I always wondered what that small bit of pipe was for on mine on the side of the frame - mines not clear which is what threw me, but presumably if it is you can easily see what level your 2 stroke oil is at, very cunning !

Far too cold to be in the garage tonight...

There is nothing in the tube on the headstock (mines not clear either so that something else to add to the list).

The pipe comes from the engine just below the carb, slightly to the rhs of the bike.

Hi Billy.
Its time we sorted this out for you.
Just to clarfy a few points;
You are putting the 2 stroke oil into the frame via the filler just behind the head stock at the very top of the frame, Yes?
You are not pouring it into the gearbox oil filler hole on the right hand side of the engine, Right?
The reason I need to make sure is, the black rubber tube you say the oil is pouring from is the gearbox breather so it would seem the 2 stroke oil is somehow getting into the gearbox.
If the bike has been previously running ok, then this is quite strange.
If you confirm that you are definately pouring the oil into the correct hole, the only options left would be breathers/oil pipes connected up wrong or some kind of internal leak from the oil pump through to the clutch housing.
Please confirm,
Andy.

Sounds like the classic oil pump seal problem to me.
Seal can get displaced if the rubber bung has been pushed onto an overfilled tank, allowing the 2-stroke oil to enter the gearbox.
Do a search on oil pump I'm sure you'll find it.

even if it was the oil pump seal gone - this surely wouldn't explain the 2 stroke oil coming from the gearbox breather, you would expect it to be a mix of the gearbox oil and the 2 stroke oil wouldn't you?

very strange problem whichever way you look at it !!

Have you checked your float switch yet :?: :?: What i think might be happening is your float switch is leaking and the oil is running down the frame on to the breather pipe so it my look like its coming out of the pipe but in fact it,s only running off it.

After looking at mine today, whilst fitting reeds and jets, I noticed the breether comes from below the side of the reed box. Dont know if this helps?

Some photos would be good I suppose.
