Whine
Whine
Noticed a whining noise since the last ride, can`t say I have noticed it before, sounds like a bearing to me, took the gen cover off and no movement at all at the crank or balance shaft, goes away at tickover comes back when you rev the bike, bike itself runs as it always has?
Any ideas? does it sound teminal!!

Re: Whine
If it is a balance shaft bearing then it won't go bang and it won't need an engine split.
There is more info in the Faq section.

Re: Whine
There is a good chance that the balance shaft itself will have some chatter marks on the bearing face.
I know mine did so i fitted a new shaft along with both bearings only for the same thing to happen a couple of thousand miles later.
I ended up disconnecting the balance shaft. That is leaving it in but taking the gear off and replacing it with a spacer. No more noise.
The job can be done in a couple of hours if you get yourself sorted first.
Give it a go and see if the vibes bother you. it smooths out a lot when it warms up.
If you dont like it just replace the worn bits and reconnect it.

Hi Eddie, I remember you talking about disconnecting it, was planning on going on a ride this Sunday, bike should be OK for that one ride? there is no play at the generator end, I will prob strip it next week after the ride, what you reckon?

Re: Whine
It is unlikely to get so bad as to cause any damage for a long time.
It's just the noise it makes that worries people.

Yep it was sudden I think, last ride out it was feeling a little laboured now and again? but all will tell Sunday cause I am off out on the lanes! no more vibs than normal and no movement on the crank or the balancer shaft end? with the cover off and a screw driver?
