No SPARK - HELP !!! ASAP

Post by peachvw »

Today I warmed the CRM up, pulled away and it died. Couldn't re-start it, filled the tank, and cleaned the plug (rather black) + checked the kill switch for continuity, still no joy.

Any ideas? The wiring seems to be the basic amount needed, everything else is by-passed.

Ive got a 99 AR, but would swap it for a C90 at the moment....

Hi Peach,

Does this mean that you are getting a spark or not? If you are getting a spark is the plug getting fuel to it?

If you arent getting a spark, try replacing the plug and plug cap - you can also try completely bypassing the killswitch.

The wiring on the CRM is very simple (even simpler on yours by the sounds of things) so just start by substituting/testing the components.

Let me know. If you are local (west sussex) i dont mind helping you out.

Braggos.

Cheers mate,

There is no spark at the plug. I Will try and get a new plug and cap, only trouble is Im standed as the CRM was supposed to be my daily transport!

The ignition is bypassed so to someone in the know it is probably easy to sort, after kicking it for half a day followed by much depression having someone get back to me is great...

Real bummer Ive just put new tyres on it and only done 9 (fast off road!!!) miles...

I will let you know how I get on, if not I will get a van and bring it over to you (im near Lewes and Im sure that's too far for you?)

Cheers mate,

:)

Hi Peach,

Yeah, check all the obvious stuff first. Actually, save yourself some money and do the following:

(1) Remove plug cap
(2) Get your mate to kick the bike over whilst you hold the end of the HT lead (with a pair of insulated pliers) about 1-2 mm off the cylinder head.

If you see a spark while your mate is kicking it means that the cap and/or plug need replacing. If you dont see a spark, cut 5-10mm off the HT and try again. If still no joy check the rest of the wiring, clean the contacts and spray with WD40/contact cleaner. Try the above again just holding the HT lead.

If you dont get a spark now then you are gonna have to check the CDI (these arent known to fail generally) and the ignition coil.

If you want to check these by replacement then you can, by all means bring the bike over and use the coil/CDI off mine - ill help as much as i can with my one good hand (cast comes the other wrist in the middle of November).

Im near Chichester so not really that far for you.

Good Luck!

B.

Hello,

A new loom? Sounds a bit drastic!

To be honest its unlikely that the loom needs replacing - what gives you that idea? My offer of help is still open if you can get your bike down here for an afternoon.

Cheers Bargos,

Im going to go through every wire to check continuity at the end of this week, afterwhich I may bring it over if thats o.k. The reason Im looking for a new loom is that the original is really hacked up, loads of conectors and crap cable routes etc...

We live and learn!

I'll keep you posted, I wish I were writting positive things about CRM's here on this site.... hopefully soon.

I had a similar problem when I first purchased my basket case. I traced back from the plug and back from the kill switch. Behind the headlight shroud I found one connector not seated correctly, this was the cause of the problem. I presumed I had loosened it when wrestling with the bike for 4 days trying to remove the swing arm.
On that occasion I took the frame and engine on a skateboard to LT!
It was worth it, I paid the price of a good mountain bike for a cracking Trail Bike.....don't give up.

Thanks for the comments - i want to make it work with the CRM !

Also Ragoon sugested testing the coil voltages, again i'll check this out too. It's probably (hopefully) something really basic - i'll know soon..

Ive only ridden it for 9 miles on and off road, and would love to ride it again before the end of next summer(!) so i'll let you know how I get on.

Peach,

Have you sorted the CRM yet? I just had a look at some other posts and the cuttout switch is a real possibility - are you certain that its not the problem?

\"Today I warmed the CRM up, pulled away and it died\"

Hey, snap!

Mine did this to me a few months ago, the spark disappeared (there is no kill switch or much else!). After much faffing, got a weak spark back only so took it to the garage.

They correctly pointed out that the crank main bearings were knackered and there was no point in looking at the electrics until the engine was sorted. So I have just finished doing my first complete engine rebuild. Christ those gaskets are expensive.

To my joy and amazement, it started and ran afterwards, and even had a strong spark and lovely bright lights. Feeling prematurely pleased with myself, I warmed it up, ran it down the garden (20 yards) and it cut out. No spark. Back to square one.

Bugger.

It looks to me like we have the same problem here, it's definitely electrical. I'm going to investigate further tomorrow and try out a spare CDI and coil I have but given the track record of this bike I very much doubt I will get anywhere.

Let me know if you find out more.

Theo
