Aside from my 15 minute commute to work, my bike is predominantly used off-road. When I'm hill climbing, riding through snow, mud, etc, anytime I drop the bike on it's side it runs for a second and dies. At this point she's a real bitch to start. I always have to change the plug and have to bring new ones with me on every ride in case I drop it. One instance I dropped it on a snowy road. Let it sit for 10 minutes, kicked it about 200 times, still nothing. Changed the plug, kicked it a bunch more, still didn't work and eventually had to coast down with the clutch in and pop the clutch in 2nd gear to get it to fire again. This makes for some pretty frustrating riding sessions. If it helps the troubleshooting, I don't use premix and i'm using an NGK b9egv plug.

What's the issue I'm having here? Surely this isn't normal for a 2 stroke to do this.

It's probably going to be a trial and error session.
Try turning of the fuel, but then pushing the choke lever.
Don't touch the throttle.
Where about's is the breather outlet located?
A couple of standard plugs are cheap BR8ES.

Flooded carb as above. Give the carb a good cleaning and make sure every vent is clear. 8 heat is generally better for the plug.

You have plug rated 9. Usually 8 is better.

8 is the Honda recommended rating. Some find that 9 is better on tuned bikes when racing.

I thought as 9 is a hotter plug so should be better for plodding as the plug will be less likely to foul at lower engine temperatures.

It's the reverse of that. A 9 will run cooler and be more likely to foul at lower speeds and temperatures but be better suited to running at flat out 'race' speeds.

So 8 will be best for fucking around in trails and river beds then? I don't run it at really high RPMs too much. And is "plodding" just going slower? I'm American so I'm not familiar with the term

Yep, the standard 8 plug will be your best bet.

Also, check the plug occasionally when engaging in the sort of riding you generally do. Is black and wet?
The plug is the best indicator of what's going on inside the combustion chamber.
The carb might need a different main jet.
