if i have a damaged fork, is it OK to just change the 1 leg, or would it be advisable to change both for a set that have come off a bike and keep the undamaged original as a spare?

Only problem I can see is if you dont know the history of yours or the new leg then they may have had the internals shims changed to alter the dampening and you would then have uneven action.
If you do go ahead then it would be a good idea to put in fresh oil and keep your springs as a pair. I'm not sure anyone will sell you one fork leg though...

No, what it is, the MK2, has a slightly dodgy adjuster on the shim stack, so if I could share half a set of forks with some one that would ease the cost a little.

'97 AR , from very dodgy memory, it's the right fork i think, but damage is to the wide part just above the fork seal area, and on the inside of the fork, {do they turn? or not sure if damage was incurred on outside and fork turned to hide?} or how he manage to take a sizeable chunk of alloy out of leg !!
it might only be superficial but could be nasty if let go big style {face plant waiting to happen }
