Right not a topic i know a great deal about !
I do know my pads will not last a decent ride ! So my first question which pads should i go for ? How much ? obviously the brakes need to stop me so i dont mind paying for decent ones !

Secondly !
How hard are they to fit i have taken off the caliper and the old pads are out the anti rattle shims are shot and snapped so the pads just swung loose so i undid the retaining bolt and out they came !
I,ve greased the pins back up after cleaning and filled the rubber boots back up with grease and everything looks fine ! the pistons may need winding back in to accept new pads but the question is where does the other shim go as its fecked on the garage floor now and mangled in pieces ! i think its got snagged at some point because i could feel a good tapping comming thro the bars that seemed to stop !

Any help as always !

P.S. do you think i should take it to a mechanic ? or is it as simple as it looks ?

Im also after decent pads for my mk1, there a different shape to the mk2 onwards

You don't have to take the calipers off - just take out the pins, remove the pads and reverse.

All brake pads are the same across the Mks.

Does anyone have a part number for the brake pads as my local bike garage were struggling yesterday

Try this for part numbers, most other makes of pads will say similar to ebc part numbers. Jon

Did a search on that site and the mk1 rear pads are different, i cant get moto x pads for mine

Hi there i have fitted E.B.C. s to my A.R. and to the lads MK1 they fitted fine the part nbs are as follows.

FRONT FA185R
BACK FA 131R
They give a reasonable compromise of wear to feel [imo]
We put new seals in lads bike [CRONYX] polished up the pistons in there.New fluid.The seals are cheap .The pistons £17.00 on line.Use a G clamp or hand clamp to push pistons back in.
The front wheel had been binding but runs sweet now.

Moving the pistons back: shove the old pads back in loosly - then wedge 2 large flat screwdrivers between them and lever them back. Generally works a treat and doesn't mark any parts that will stay on the bike.

Anti-rattle springs: Mine broke - my brakes now should rattle, but I can't hear them over the sound of the pipe, so I don't care. The pads haven't fallen out, so I wouldn't worry about it as the caliper seems to hold them in.

I will order some of the EBC pads, generally speaking there pads should be fine as they make some good pads.

I,m kinda hoping that mine dont need all the above mentioned pisto polishing altho i have applid special grease in the rubber seals in good quantity, the rubber boots are ok and dont look worn at all but the sliders were very dry and cruddy.

Taking the calliper off has given me the chance to clean the bracket of all gunk as i bought the bike with blown fork seals the lowers were plastered in dirty old oil including the caliper, a few rides out over xmas cleared the pads of any contamination on the surface with abrasive mud me thinks its also worn them down a lot too !
