FMtB - Why would that happen :?: . Even with severe rust the organic plates wouldn't stick with the oil in them :? .

Bet it turns out to be the cable.

The plates could have warped, this would give rise to the stalling when a gear is engaged, which is essentially the problem as I understand it, no?
Once on the move, drive isn't the issue.

Yes :BB - you are right if the steel plates were warped.
