ps whys it a nono to go prepared for obstacles in the UK?
I been riding around with a saw in my back pack recently - its certainly helped!

To go out prepared for major route clearance isn't allowed,[chain saws] and permission from the R.O.W. department needs to be attained before hand, [ insurance, health and safety, blah, blah, blah].
However, the minor pruning is allowed, and I always carry my nifty little folding saw.
The only issue with the folding saws is they don't put a set on the teeth of the blade, so they constantly bind up on branches with any hint of moisture in them. A small set in the teeth allows the cut dust to be cleared out of the cutting face.
A small pair of bypass clippers are also useful for those wayward brambles.

I managed to stuff a full size saw in my back pack - been handy on bamboo recently - but bloody hell that stuff grows back fast! I hate brambles tho...

If you took a set of bolt croppers with you to cut open gates (even if these gates are obstructing a highway) you can done for criminal damage. Sounds daft that opening up a legal highway you can get nicked but as the say, the law is an ass

We only have one gate on a Byway in Surrey . The 4 x 4 boys might need a set though, width restrictions are springing up almost weekly though .

Always good to see how things should be done.

I carry one of these as it is the biggest saw that I can fit in the backpack.
It will easily cut through pine and semi dead hardwood.
