MK3 Neutral switch
Hi All, can anyone shed any light on the MK3 neutral switch and wiring - the leisure trail pdf download shows a single wire neutral switch where my bike has 3 wires? I have used the search but most results are for people wishing to use for example MK3 ecu's on MK2 bikes etc. My bike has the 3 wire large switch but the two wires which go to the ecu have been disconnected, the remaining cable which is still connected supplies the neutral lamp on the dash. Does this mean the neutral switch is also a gear position switch (as on the AR?) & the ignition is mapped according to what gear the bike is in? If so why might someone disconnect it? I have the loom off the bike at the moment and I plan on improving the MK3 wiring diagram in the leisure trail download by adding colours and cable positions for the ecu and power valve actuator etc. Once done I will either post it on here or host it somewhere and provide a link. Thanks in advance.

Thanks for that skidmark, saved me some work, I will just update mine with the 3 wire neutral switch detail.

Yo SkidMark - I think it is you who has missed my point. I never searched for or even wanted a wiring diagram as I already have one, I was merely stating that whilst I have the loom off I will improve on the diagram by adding colours and cable positions, seeing as you pointed me to one which already exists I will use that, and again thank you (the diagram again though only shows a single wire neutral switch circuit - another reason I was going to update the drawing). The whole point of my post and the object of my searches was if you read my op to find why the MK3 has a 3 wire neutral switch and why two cores from the switch that connect to the ecu have been disconnected on my bike and what effect this may have.
Hi twistednuts, do you mean I have a hybrid of MK2 and MK3. It would not surprise me but I have matching MK3 frame and engine numbers. I will check the ecu part numbers and report back later today.

@ twistednuts - I have the ecu here and the part number is CI659 which according to Knackered data is indeed a MK3 ecu. So I think the hybrid theory is out of the window lol.

Just done some more tinkering and have found that the neutral switch does indeed detect gear position also. One contact is made in 4th (light green with black stripe) and the other contact is made in 5th and 6th gear (light green with yellow stripe). I think I will have to ride the bike back to back with and without these wires connected when it's back together to see if I can discern any differences.

It should make a differance as that is the whole point of the ECU controlled powervalve - to 'tune' the bike for all different conditions like speed, gear position, throttle opening etc. Give it ago if your brave enough but be cautious that the ECUs are particularly fragile on AR's.

Im totally puzzled with this thread now, lol.
I wasnt meaning you had a hybrid, i was just pointin out to back off road that the wiring diagram in that link was for a mk 2 and 3.

Hi, its definitely a MK3 machine with MK3 engine, frame and CDI/ECU and NOT an AR. Sorry if its got a bit confusing lol.

The question is whether the Mk3 ECU changes the ignition map for different gears. On the AR it definitely does but the AR gives a lot more feeds to the ECU.
On the Mk3 it only seems to be gear selection. This in itself doesn't seem much to base ECU decisions on but it is unlike Honda to introduce redundancy into anything especially the engine

I may be missin somethin, or a bit mixed up, i dont have a mk3 so im in the dark.
But how come theres 3 wires on your neutral switch when there should only be one, according to the wiring diagram...
